Comments on Spatial Randomness in Dentritic Stream Channel Networks.

Abstract

Shreve's hypothesis of infinite topologically random stream channel networks is in essential agreement with observations of topological properties on many networks by numerous workers. Many basic attributes of stream networks are spatially dependent, such as locations of sources, distances between stream junctions, and angles of tributary entrance, that are not taken into account by analysis of topological properties. The main objective of this paper is to emphasize the need for including spatial properties as well as topological properties of stream networks in terrain analysis. The results of our analysis suggest that mathematical network models and simulation models cannot be fully accepted as reflecting real-world phenomena without more elaborate tests than are presently the rule.
