Research in Computer-Aided Translation, Russian to English.
Abstract
The research was focused on ambiguity and homography in the Russian language, in order to facilitate the coding of Russian word forms for a machine translation (MT) dictionary. The coding category 'word class' does not have a unique value for each Russian word, and the types of homographs (i.e. the combinations of word classes necessary to describe ambiguous forms) in the Russian language are listed in the report. Furthermore, the case, number and gender of certain forms are not unique, either because of the paradigm of the word or because of the overlapping of parts of the paradigms of two distinct words. The circumstances under which non-uniqueness occurs are elaborated. The MT system programs which have been rewritten in order that they may be run on the IBM System/360 are described. (Author)
