Seasonal and Yearly Variations in the Iciness and the Position of Ice Edge in the Black and Azov Seas, Which Are Associated with Atmospheric Circulation (Sezonnye i Mezhgoddovye Izmeneniya Ledovitosti i Polozheniya Kromki lda na Cherom i Azovskom Moryakh v Svyazi s Osobennostyami Atmosfernoi),

Abstract

Investigations of seasonal and yearly variations in the iciness (ice area plus ice thickness) and the position of ice edge in the Black and Azov Seas are discussed. The study is based on shipboard and aircraft observations of ice. The concluding chapter deals with investigations in the fluctuations of iciness associated with seasonal and yearly variations in atmospheric circulation over the North Atlantic Ocean and the western Eurasia. The findings are expressed in mathematical formulae that can be used in the forecasting of ice conditions and the position of the ice edge. Data on the severeness of winters in the Black and Azov Seas, the thickness and duration of ice cover are tabulated. (Author)
