An Optimum Method for Computing Winds from a Starute Trajectory,

Abstract

The Starute System offers the capability of obtaining a highly accurate and detailed wind profile when tracked by an FPS-16 radar. A computer program has been written to utilize this potential in obtaining a wind profile. The wind accuracy achieved with the 'Starute Wind Program' between 30 and 60 km is an RMS wind error of 1 meter/second or less. Wave structure on the order of .5 kilometer is observable below 45 km and one kilometer structure to 60 kilometers. A discussion of the effect of vertical winds, apparent mass, and wind acceleration on a wind measurement is also included. The 'Starute Wind Program' is compared to the program in use at the Eastern Test Range from the standpoint of accuracy and frequency response. (Author)
