Turbulence Induced Rolling Moments on Finned Vehicles,

Abstract

Expressions are derived for the rolling moment on long cylindrical finned missiles moving through a turbulent fluid at zero angle of attack. The moment is a function of the time average and fluctuating velocity components in the turbulent boundary layer of the vehicle. Solutions for these velocities are found from the Reynolds' momentum equations by making suitable assumptions, and contain parameters which must be determined experimentally. (Author)
