M. I. T. Plane Strain Device.

Abstract

Although many foundation engineering and slope stability problems involve plane strain conditions, the profession has generally relied upon triaxial compression tests to obtain undrained stress-strain and strength parameters for design. Research is needed to compare plane strain and triaxial strength data on a variety of soils for different loading and drainage conditions. The report describes a plane strain device that has been developed at M.I.T. during the past four years. The apparatus and associated equipment and test procedures are described in detail. (Author)
