Spillway and Stilling Basin Columbia Dam, Chattahoochee River, Alabama and Georgia; Hydraulic Model Investigation.

Abstract

This report presents the results of tests conducted on section models of the gated and fixed-crest spillways for Columbia Dam, a navigation structure proposed for construction on the Chattahoochee River. The models were constructed to undistorted scales of 1:27.2 (gated spillway) and 1:36 (fixed-crest spillway). The original design provided stilling basins below each of the spillways, but model tests demonstrated the feasibility of eliminating energy-dissipating devices. Pressure measuremtnts on the sill of the gated spillway revealed no unusual conditions.
