Spillway for New Cumberland Locks and Dam (Final Design), Ohio River, West Virginia; Hydraulic Model Investigation.

Abstract

New Cumberland Dam spillway will consist of eleven 110-ft-wide bays through which flow will be regulated by five submergible- and six nonsubmergible-type tainter gates. Energy dissipation will be accomplished on a horizontal apron surmounted by baffle piers and an end sill. Bulkhead sections will be provided for emergency closure of the spillway bays. Model investigations were conducted in a 1:25-scale section model which reproduced one gate bay and adjacent half bays, and were supplemented by observations of stilling basin performance in a 1-ft-wide glass-sided flume. Test were concerned with hoist loads and vibration tendencies of the submergible tainter gate, the performance of the stilling basin below both the submergible and nonsubmergible gates, and hydraulic forces acting in a vertical direction on the emergency bulkheads.
