The Effect of Lubricating Films on the Laws of Sliding Friction,

Abstract

The dependence of friction force on the normal load was examined. For the friction pair tungsten steel low steel appeared to be defined by B. V. Deryagin equation: F equals mu where mu is the friction coeff., P omicron the SP. mol. interaction force, and S PHI the actual contact surface. Several load cycles were investigated. For the first loading when the surfaces were cool and covered with protective oxide layers, F equals mu because the contribution of the mol. component to F was very low. After the surfaces were heated the protective layers were disturbed and mu increased because the number of the adhesion centers increased. When the surfaces that were heated during the preceding cycle were loaded, mu decreased rapidly because of the lubricating (fused) metal layers formed. The effect was also examined for the friction pair CU steel of lubricating films.
