Efficient Digital Encoding Methods for Improved Military Communication Systems.

Abstract

The report was written by the nine graduate students and six faculty members who compose the THEMIS research team working on Digital Encoding Systems at North Carolina State University. The research program is designed to accomplish two primary objectives: To obtain a basic understanding of the digital encoding process and to derive an optimum digital encoding algorithm under certain general conditions; To determine explicitly what kinds of practical digital encoding equipment should be used for the various tasks which require it. In order to accomplish these objectives, three working groups were formed and progress is reported herein in each of these groups -- source encoding theory, speech encoding and video encoding. The ork of all these groups has been greatly enhanced by use of an Adage AGT-10 computer now jointly owned and controlled by the THEMIS project. This report is composed primarily of the individual progress reports of the team members and each of these individual reports is a self-contained subsection of the larger report. New results are reported in every area of the research program. (Author)
