On the Application of an Approximation Technique to the Problem of Optimal Stabilization of Nonlinear Systems.

Abstract

The paper presents an approximation technique which can be used in the analytic construction of a control law for an arbitrary nonlinear control system. The problem considered here is the construction of a control law which will stabilize the system such that a given integral criterion achieves a minimum value along the trajectory. Liapunov's stability theory is used in the problem formulation, and the solution is achieved by utilizing either Galerkin's method or the method of characteristics, or a combination of the two.
