Electron Momentum Density in the Lithium-Magnesium System.

Abstract

Electron momentum distributions have been determined from measured Compton profiles of polycrystalline samples of lithium, disordered Li(0.5)Mg(0.5), and magnesium. In all three cases, the band-electron momentum-distributions exhibit a discontinuity at the free-electron value of the Fermi momentum and a high-momentum tail above the attributable mainly to band-electron correlation. The band-electron momentum-distribution becomes progressively less free-electron-like in going from Li to Li(0.5)Mg(0.5) to Mg, with Mg exhibiting some p-electron-like character. (Author)
