Accuracy in Approximations to the Time Development Solution of the Vlasov Equation,

Abstract

The paper concerns the establishment of functional bounds on the error in approximating the solution to the Vlasov equation for a one component plasma in the presence of external fields. The approximate solution is the time development of the initial distribution along trajectories described entirely by the external fields. Thus the error is due to the nonlinear self-field effect which modifies the simple trajectories. An indication of the required conditions for close approximation to the true solution is established for the case of slowly varying external electromagnetic fields. (Author)
