Final Report to the Office of Naval Research, Geography Branch,

Abstract

Research conducted under this contract emphasizes computer-oriented techniques and procedures for expressing and analyzing quantitative data in the classical fields of geology and geography. Seventeen Technical Reports were issued, ranging over such topics as map analysis, stochastic process models, computer simulation, description and analysis of stream networks, and some others. The research topics presented in this report are treated in an informal style within the historical context of developments during the past decade. These developments include a vastly increased use of computers in the earth sciences, as well as a much greater availability of computer programs adapted to the special needs of the science. Model building in geology and geography expanded rapidly, and computer simulation, hardly anticipated a decade ago, is rapidly becoming the basis for a wide range of geological and geographical 'experiments' on a scale hitherto impossible.
