Abstract
The symposium on Microbes and Biological Production is summarized. The synthetic activities of microorganisms for the preparation of food, drugs, and chemicals and examination of the influence of microorganisms on production and presentation of regular food supplies is discussed. While efforts at present are merely in the first stages, within ten years a million tons of yeast will be produced annually from petroleum by the fermentation industry. The application of microbiology to insect pest control appears to be one of the promising areas of work to be expanded in the future. From the standpoint of preserving the ecology greater application of ingenuity is needed to keep the forces of pollution under control in the face of advances in intensive farming and livestock production. More effective conversion of farm and industrial waste products from polluting influences to useful byproducts must be developed. Microbiology can and should provide the solution. (Author)
