Liquid Crystals

Abstract

The report is a brief state-of-the-art survey aimed at bringing the reader up to date on what is known of the fundamental properties of liquid crystals and their applications - potential as well as actual. The report is divided into three parts: a historical survey of the development of the science of liquid crystals, a summary of present knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of liquid crystals, and a section on present and possible future applications. Theories of the structure of liquid crystals, thermodynamics, the effect of external forces and fields, viscosity and diffusion, optical properties, and many other physical topics are discussed. Also covered in some detail are the correlation of molecular structure with liquid crystalinity, a synthesis of liquid crystals, and polymorphism.
