Synthesis of Polymers Expected to Have Superconducting Properties.

Abstract

The objective of the research program was the synthesis and evaluation of organic polymers which on theoretical grounds might exhibit superconducting properties at or near room temperature. The report discusses research on the synthesis of a conjugated polymer chain that could be adequately characterized, and then on the attachment of dye molecules, as close as possible to this chain, without allowing cross conjugation. One approach was the synthesis and characterization of Schiffbase polymers with side-chain dye molecules. Considerable effort was devoted to the preparation of low molecular weight model compounds to define reaction conditions necessary for high polymer formation and to provide complete electronic spectra for the computational program. However, when efforts were made to combine the dye molecules and conjugated polymers, steric hindrance prevented the synthesis of the proposed polymers. In a second approach, efforts were made to avoid the problem of steric hindrance by synthesizing modified Schiff-base polymers from 2,5-dihydroxybenzoquinone and various substituted diamines. Polymers were prepared with and without attached dye groups and also as metal complexes; however, electrical testing of these materials indicated that they were insulators. Another approach included the synthesis of a conjugated spine of dehydrogenated poly-9-vinylanthracene with dye precursors attached through chloromethyl groups on the anthracene units. Electrical testing indicated that they were insulators. The final approach tried was the use of poly-4-chloropyridine as the conjugated chain and again the attachment of the dye precursor via a chloromethyl group. (Author)
