The Spline Approximation as an Engineering Tool.
Abstract
The paper contains a discussion of the problem of representing curves and surfaces, such as are encountered in engineering design, by spline curves and spline surfaces. The significance of the piecewise analytic nature of spline functions is stressed; some formulae are given, but the emphasis is on general principles rather than specific formulae. The advantages of using a basis of cardinal splines are discussed. For these advantages to be realized, however, a uniform mesh is required. Thus, attention is given to the possibility of imposing a uniform mesh. Finally, the importance of using splines as a basic design tool -- rather than simply as an approximating device for curves and surfaces arrived at by other means -- is emphasised. (Author)
