Development of a Pycnocline Follower for Measurement of Internal Waves.

Abstract

The memorandum reports the design and construction of a neutrally buoyant oceanographic instrument that is used for the measurement of internal waves at the main pycnocline. Eight such instruments, built by the Grumman Aerospace Research Department for the University of Miami, will be used in an investigation of internal waves in the Baltic Sea. These newly designed devices (pycnocline followers) are entirely constructed of stainless steel and contain a pressure recorder to register depth variations of the instrument for periods up to 30 days.
