Blood Preservation Solutions: A Review.
Abstract
Various methods of studying red cell viability and hemoglobin function by measuring ATP and 2,3-DPG, respectively, are discussed. Blood can be stored for 5 to 6 weeks at 4 C and retain red cell concentrations of ATP and 2,3-DPG which will provide for survival and function of the blood immediately upon transfusion by supplementing the solutions with adenine, inosine, and methylene blue or pyruvate.
