Triply Ionized Neodymium in Lithium Yttrium Fluoride,

Abstract

Absorption spectra of Nd(3+) in single-crystal LiYF4 have been measured at 25 and 85K for the purpose of establishing the quadruplet I(13/2) and quadruplet I(15/2) ground-term energy levels. These energy levels and those published previously for the quadruplet I(9/2) and quadruplet I(11/2) multiplets were compared with theoretical energy levels. An rms deviation of 3.87/cm was obtained between calculated and experimental energy levels. Comparisons of the spin-orbit parameters, the lamda(n), with earlier work concerning Nd(3+) in CaWO4 suggests that the lamda(n) adequately describe the splitting of the free-ion energy levels. Therefore, these B(km) values might be expected to describe the effect of the crystal on the free-ion energy levels. In addition, calculated g factors for all the energy states of the ground term are given. (Author)
