Normal Brain Cholinesterase Activity in the White Perch.

Abstract

An automated method was developed to measure whole brain cholinesterase (ChE) of the white perch, Roccus americanus (Gmelin), and to define normal variation of this enzyme. Fish were seined from three sites in the Gunpowder River, a tidal estuary of the Chesapeake Bay near Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland, from April through October 1970. There was no significant variation in brain ChE with sex. Activity of this enzyme did vary seasonally, probably with water temperature, increasing with elevated summer temperatures and declining with the onset of winter. Cholinesterase levels also varied inversely with brain weight. The brain ChE activity in 6 of 10 groups of fish frozen for 1 to 64 days at -70F was significantly lower than that in fresh fish of similar brain weights. (Author)
