Performance of Rats in Escaping Punishment.

Abstract

Rats were conditioned to escape from punishment associated with obtaining food. Only when the safe period was relatively short did they fail to escape punishment. Decreases in the frequency of food reinforcement also caused decreases in the frequency of responding to produce safe periods. The results suggest that escape from punishment is a positive reinforcer for rats. (Author)
