Aircraft Cockpit Fog Simulator (Day Version). Volume I.

Abstract

The report presents the results of a program to design, build and test an improved aircraft cockpit fog simulator for use in in-flight training of pilots to recognize the effects of fog on landing performance while flying in daytime VFR conditions. The system was designed for a ARINC type radar altimeter but was changed to be compatible with the DC-7 Radar Altimeter. Fog program diversification is provided by visibility controls which change the type or characteristic of the fog as well as the category and decision height. Fog effects are stabilized against changes in the pitch attitude of the aircraft to maintain a constant cut-off angle and prevent the pilot from 'looking under' the fog. Realism is achieved by collimating the light from the fog film to make the fog appear out in front of the aircraft and not inside the cockpit. (Author)
