Results of Collecting and Processing Statistical Data on the Nature of Errors on Magnetic Tape,

Abstract

The paper presents statistical data on the nature of errors on magnetic tape used in outer memory devices. An investigation showed that in the readout of information from magnetic tapes, both single and group errors may occur. Single errors constitute approximately 70 percent of all errors. Group errors always have the configuration of a distortion along the track, occurring predominantly in the form of character fadeouts. Statistical data shows that about 50 percent of all errors could be prevented by preliminary verification and sorting of magnetic tapes and marking of non-defective portions. (Author)
