Investigation of the Propagation of Ultrasound in Liquids and Solids.
Abstract
Extensive research on various acoustic propagation effects has been completed. This includes theoretical and experimental studies of diffraction effects of circular and rectangular sound sources, and of attenuation effects in waveguide systems. Studies have been made of the generation, propagation and detection of acoustic transients in liquids and solids. The results have been used in an investigation of laser-induced acoustic impulses and damage. An exhaustive study has been made of relaxation processes in liquids at very high frequencies. Measurements of the velocity and absorption of ultrasound as functions of temperature and pressure have been made in several simple fluids including argon, carbon dioxide and sulfur hexafluoride. A program of study of the elastic and magnetoacoustic properties of the alkali metals has been established. (Author)
