Optically Pumped Masers Using F Centers.

Abstract

The feasibility has been demonstrated of using F centers in potassium iodide as the crystal for a selective absorption optically pumped maser. Experiments indicate that this type of maser could operate at temperatures above 10K, frequencies up to 40 GHz, with a bandwidth of 500 MHz, and could be pumped by (GaAl)As laser diodes. An attempt to demonstrate inversion was made, but the single laser diode that was used had insufficient average power. It is recommended that (1) this work be continued using diode arrays, and (2) a small traveling wave maser be evaluated. (Author)
