Chemotherapy of Rodent Malaria Drug Action Against Exo-Erythrocytic Stages and Drug Rsistant Strains.

Abstract

Evaluation of seven older and seven newer WRAIR compounds as blood schizontocides was completed and a further five are continuing. Causal prophylactic and sporontocidal investigations were blocked by a zoonosis in the mosquito colony. Drug interaction has been further investigated and earlier evidence of potentiation between menoctone and cycloquanil is confirmed. Investigations on the mode of action of chloroquine and mechanisms of drug resistance confirm earlier hypothesis of a respiratory switch mechanism and suggest a simple physico-chemical explanation of drug uptake. Chloroquine-resistant parasites are shown to possess a satellite DNA. (Author)
