Effect of No/Low-Lead Motor Gasoline on Engine Operation.

Abstract

A study was initiated to determine the effect of no/low-lead motor gasoline on engine operation. Both, regular grade (nominally 93 octane) low-lead and special grade (91 octane) of lead-free gasoline were used. Results were tabulated from Davis-Monthan, Kelly, and Vandenberg AFBs. In no instances were detrimental effects due to lead removal noted. The occurrence of engine knock and engine after-run in selected cases was traced to the low 91 octane of the fuel being used. No/low-lead automotive gasoline of regular grade (nominally 93 octane) will suffice for all Air Force spark-ignition ground equipment in lieu of leaded regular grade fuel. (Author)
