Varieties of Communication in Learning from Instruction.
Abstract
The project undertook to develop a self-instructional program to teach 10th grade boys communication skills. Part I concerned describing object properties; Part II, arrangements of objects, and Part III, movement of object parts. The program incorporated a rationale for a basic word list, and was progressively revised through successive tryouts. Experiment 1 tested the effectiveness of a printed-auditory mixture of communication in which functions of gaining attention and stating the objective, and recalling previously learned skills were compared with an all-printed condition and control conditions. Fifty tenth grade boys participated. Results indicated a significant effect of the auditory communication when performing the recall function, for Part II of the program. Experiment 2 used a revised version of the program to test the effectiveness of a printed-auditory mix of communication, in the learning of 36 tenth grade boys. A significant aptitude-treatment interaction was found, in which the auditory feedback was more effective for medium and low aptitude students. (Author)
