Text Processing in the Measurement of an Organization's Goal Structure.

Abstract

A frequently occurring problem in organizational research is that of establishing the nature of some qualitative characteristic (the structure of goals, programs, and actors, in this case) by analysis of verbal data, particularly documentary data such as memoranda and reports. Computer technology appears to have reached the stage where an attack can be made on this problem. The paper reports a first effort to do so. The general problem is modeled in the form of a five-page English text describing a specific organization. A complete solution is presented, together with an analysis of the errors and further problems discovered in a partial computer-generated solution. The unaided machine is still inferior to the human mind as a device for understanding natural language. (Author)
