Notes on Side-Looking Sonar.

Abstract

The purpose of this memorandum is to set down certain elementary principles relating to use of side-looking, shadowgraph-type sonars to search for objects on the sea floor or to map its roughness. Although the topics relating to search rate and the use of unfocussed or fixed focussed systems have been well-known for some time the advantages of dynamic focussing and multiple beam operation represent much more recent developments not yet incorporated in hardware.
