Advances in Doppler Weather Radar Observing Methods and Data Processing Techniques.

Abstract

A continuing objective of the Navy-sponsored, Doppler radar studies has been to develop the operational utility of the radar, both as a weather research tool and as an observing instrument useful for specialized, short-term forecasting. To fill this role effectively, observing techniques and data processing methods must be developed that will permit a single Doppler radar to work alone. The work discussed in this report deals with attempts to push even further the utility of single component measurements in describing the total wind field. First, a curve fitting technique is described which provides estimates of the horizontal wind from small azimuth sector scans. Using this method, it is possible to get independent estimates of the wind vector at many different points in space and thus learn something of the spatial variability of the wind. The single parameter curve fitting technique is then extended to two dimensions. It is shown how the area fitting technique provides the means to compute the spatial derivatives of the wind field directly from a single, small sector scan. (Author)
