Hierarchies of Functional Mappings Between Pairs of Scaled Variables.

Abstract

Results of recent studies investigating the learning of functional relations have indicated: (a) that linear relations between variables are easier to learn than nonlinear relations; and (b) that among the linear relations, positive are easier to learn than negative. The present study examines whether the dominance of linear functions would prevail in tasks where the S, rather than the experimenter, is free to specify the functions. (Author)
