A Study on the Effect of Electromagnetic Mixing on the Crystallization Process of Deformable Magnesium Alloys,
Abstract
The effect of electromagnetic stirring (ES) on the ingot solidification of MA8 and MA2-1 Mg-alloys was studied during continuous casting. With increase of stirring intensity the grain size of the ingots became refined, which was caused by the leveling and lowering of the melt temperature next to the solidification front. ES contributes to the macroscopic growth of crystals of manganese phase. With increase of ES intensity the amount of large crystals of maganese phase increased. The refinement of a grain due to ES made it possible to raise the strength and plasticity of the ingots. In ingots of MA8 alloy, ES also made it possible to completely eliminate the anisotropy in mechanical properties. One of the significant results of ES was the increase of plasticity during processing of the ingots of the Mg-alloys, as a result of which crack formation was alleviated in rolling and forging.
