Relation of the Yield Point to the Formation of Cracks During Plastic Deformation of Steel,

Abstract

A study was made of the process of crack formation and its role in yield phenomena during the plastic deformation of steel. Plastic deformation at various stages of its flow can be accompanied by the occurrence of nucleating microcracks; with ductile metals this process occurs more easily during the secondary activated dislocation pile-up than in the primary pile-up. Only a comparatively small dislocation pile-up is necessary for the nucleation of viscous cracking by such a mechanism. A relationship between the moment of formation of cracks and YS gives results that do not conflict with experimental data and permits the explanation of certain effects observed during the drawing of steel wire.
