Aircraft Flight-Attitude Information as Indicated by Exterior Paint Patterns.

Abstract

Five experiments were conducted to find what effect aircraft paint patterns have on pilots' ability to identify aircraft attitudes. Models were presented to the subjects (licensed pilots) singly. Subjects were allowed two seconds to view the pattern against a given background and under given levels of simulated sunlight, skylight, and background brightnesses. The subject was to match the attitude of the problem model to one of 15 flight attitudes displayed on a response board before him. The major finding of the five studies is that paint patterns do not greatly affect pilot judgments of aircraft attitude in this simulated situation. (Author)
