Explanation and Example of Version 1 of Factor Analysis.

Abstract

The purpose of this technical memorandum is to provide a historical record of the computational procedures involved in the USAEEC Version I of Factor Analysis. This version is based upon the Wherry-Winer method (1953) designed for the factoring of a large number of items and utilizes the varimax technique (Kaiser, 1959) to accomplish rotation to positive manifold and simple structure. When validation information is available an approximation to the validity coefficients for the extracted factors can be computed using an incomplete covariance matrix solution (Horst, 1965). Finally, aside from the discussion of factor analysis, the subject of the stratified alpha reliability coefficient and its relationship to test construction is considered. (Author)
