Transmitter Tube for Troposcatter Application.

Abstract

Magnet studies were concluded and a yoke electromagnet whose coils are wound with copper foil was selected for the high efficiency demonstration tube. The yoke and coil structures were designed and ordered. A rare earth magnetic study program was initiated during this period. The results of this study will indicate whether or not permanent magnet focusing can be used in the future. Tuner analysis led to the choice of an inductive sliding contact tuner to be evaluated in the high efficiency demonstration klystron. Rapid and simplified tuning schemes were studied and a design approach selected. A paper design was completed to show compatibility with the electrical design. The paper design was satisfactory but will not be constructed or demonstrated during Phase II. A coolant study was completed and Dowtherm 209 was selected as a satisfactory coolant for the present high efficiency design. A combined vapor-phase, convection-cooled system was selected as a practical compromise for Phase II demonstration. (Author)
