The purpose of this study is to provide instructors, students, and others working in the survival, counterinsurgency, and human factors fields with the basic geographical data bearing on emergency survival in South America. The physical and cultrual features of the rain-forests, savannas, and deserts of South America are described and evaluated in terms of favorable and unfavorable factors, and in terms of obstacles that would be of concern to downed crewmen forced to live on their own under emergency survival conditions.
