Vigilance Decrement: A Critical Review of the Literature and an Experimental Program

Abstract

The paper presents a critical review of the literature related to the problem of vigilance. It presents an outline for an experimental program to investigate some of the variables which influence vigilance or the maintenance of sustained attention. It is in terms of vigilance or attention, as an intervening variable, that one would describe fluctuations or changes in the success with which operators skilled in a particular discrimination make that discrimination over long-time periods of time.
