A Dynamic Simulation Study of Air Traffic Capacity in the San Francisco Bay Terminal Area.

Abstract

A dynamic simulation of air traffic operations in the San Francisco Bay Terminal Area was conducted to determine air traffic capacity estimates when several different airport expansion plans were implemented. Capacity estimates were made for the following separate conditions: first, the present day system slightly modified to accommodate an increased volume of traffic; second, with the operation of an additional runway at San Francisco Airport; third, with the operation of an additional runway at Oakland Airport instead of at San Francisco; and fourth, with the operation of a new multi-parallel runway airport located near the south end of San Francisco Bay and without the expansion to either San Francisco or Oakland Airports. In addition, an estimate was also made of the total system capacity when all airport expansions were implemented. (Author)
