Some New Results in the Combinatorial Theory of Balanced Arrays of Strength Four with 2=or< u Sub 2=or< 6,

Abstract

Various simple but stringent conditions are given which are necessary for the existence of certain balanced arrays (B-arrays, or BA) of strength four, 2 symbols, and index set (u sub 0, u sub 1, u sub 2, u sub 3, u sub 4) with 2=or< u sub 2=or< 6. In a paper by Srivastava (1970), necessary and sufficient existence conditions have been obtained for m-rowed B-arrays of strength four and m=or<6. This paper is therefore concerned with m > 6. Also, apart from the case u sub 2 = 1 considered in detail by Srivastava and Chopra (1970), the range (u2=or<6) chosen here corresponds to important applications in the theory of factorial designs.
