Protection of Metals from Corrosion by Inhibitors,
Abstract
The action as inhibitors of metal corrosion of compounds of the azole type contg. a benzene ring was studied. All of these compounds reacted with the metals, forming a film on their surface. None of the compounds studied was an effective inhibitor of steel corrosion, but their solutions did protect Cu and Al. Benzotriazole inhibited completely the corrosion of Cu and Al at 0.0001 and 0.01 percent, resp. Benzothiazole inhibited the corrosion of Cu and Al in a concentration of 0.01 percent and benzoxazole in a concentration of 0.01 and 0.1 percent, respectively. While benzimidazole protected Cu in a concentration of 0.0001-001 percent. A solution containing this substance in an amount is smaller than or equal to 1 percent was required to prevent the corrosion of Al. The corrosion of silumin and of the alloys Amg and Amts was prevented by benzotriazole and benzothiazole in the same concentrations as those which protected Al. The protective films were stable and were retained on the surface of metals for a long time after removal of samples from the inhibitor solutions. Among compounds of this class, only benzimidazole and benzotriazole are alkali solution. The inhibitor action of benzimidazole changed little with the pH. (Author)
