Calculation of the Coefficient of Friction during the Upsetting of a Specimen through a Soft Packing,

Abstract

The paper deals with the initial stage in upsetting of a cylindrical specimen through packing made of a softer material. The velocity field in the packing material is determined as well as the intensity of strain rates and the coefficient of rigidity. The law of distribution of radial flow velocities with respect to the thickness of the packing is taken as linear, and the friction stress, as in hydromechanics, is defined in terms of the coefficient of rigidity and the velocity gradient. An analytical expression is found for the coefficient of friction which contains the geometric parameters of the workpiece and the mechanical characteristics of the metals of the packing and the specimen.
