Scannable Cold-Cathode Study.

Abstract

The feasibility of using micron-size field-emission cathodes in combination with a phosphor screen for the construction of a scannable display device is explored. The results demonstrated the feasibility of drawing field emission from asperities grown on Mo by the Al treatment, with sufficient emission obtained to excite a phosphor screen to appreciable brightness. Incorporation of the field-emission type of cathode into an operational display device requires additional engineering development to achieve reasonable life and cathode stability. (Author)
