An Investigation of Digital Filtering Techniques,
Abstract
In the study the digital computer used as a tool for signal processing. The problem was to find a method for the computer to locate the returning sonar pulse, echoing off a submarine, from background reverberation. To do this digital filters were programmed. Success came finally with the use of the Fast Fourier Transform algorithm. With its use, a sonar operator would know the following properties of the echo; doppler shift, intensity range. The doppler shift gives the relative velocity of the target allowing the operator to determine where in range the echo should appea on following returns. As the operator integrates the echoes with past echoes using range and velocity the probabilities of the echo being a submarine rises while the probability of the echo being noise tends to zero.
