Description and Evaluation of a Loading Technique Employing Springs for Use in the Testing of Small Scale Shell Models,

Abstract

A technique for applying loads in small scale shell model studies is presented. This technique consists of a gridwork arrangement of springs attached at their upper ends to wire or string hangers that pass through small diameter holes in the shell surface and are connected to load pads resting on top of the shell surface. The lower ends of the springs are attached to a horizontal rigid plate. This plate is lowered by some suitable means, thereby transferring load from the springs, through the hangers, to the load pads and the shell surface. An evaluation of this system under use in the testing of hyperbolic paraboloid shells having both elastic and rigid boundaries is given. (Author)
