Thin Films of the Rare-Earth Metals,

Abstract

A vacuum thermal method of producing thin films(1-10 mu m) of rare earth metals (Sm, Dy, Tn, and Yb) is described and its efficiency is compared with existing methods (which are briefly reviewed). A very effective method of obtaining the thin films in question is by reducing the corresponding oxides with La or Zr in the form of chips or shavings, the metal thereupon being evaporated and condensed on a cold substrate in another part of the apparatus.
