Trend Surface Analysis.
Abstract
In recent years there have been sessions at many meetings and many papers devoted to Trend Surface Analysis. Often quite heated arguments have developed between the proponents of rival theories. In a recent paper (1969) the writer has tried to set out the philosophic or methodological issues and to survey briefly the various possible approaches. There, the extensive literature suggested by applications in other areas, was pointed out to geologists. The present paper describes the relationship of the key results in Matheron's most important work - the book 'Les variables regionalises et leur Estimation' - to the English literature. The most important development, 'Universal Kriging', is explained by taking the simplest formulation that shows its essence. (Author)
